Through workshops, keynotes and strategic planning, we lead educational communities to reframe and disrupt their understandings about racism and other forms of oppression and to develop actionable next steps for creating more humanizing educational spaces..
Drs Maloney and Picower are nationally recognized scholars in the field of education and are the Co-Directors of the Transformative Education Network at Montclair State which houses two innovative teacher education programs, the Urban Teacher Residency, Newark Teacher Project as well as the Critical Urban Education Speaker Series.
Dr. Tanya Maloney is an Associate Professor of secondary education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Montclair State University. Dr. Maloney began her career in education as a high school mathematics teacher at Robeson High School in Chicago, IL. Her qualitative research considers issues of race, racism, and justice in teacher education, leadership education, and mathematics education. Dr. Maloney’s work is published in Cognition and Instruction, Teaching and Teacher Education, the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, and the Journal of Research on Leadership Education.
Dr. Bree Picower is a Professor at Montclair State University in the College of Education and Human Development. She is the author of Reading, Writing and Racism, Practice What You Teach: Social Justice Education in the Classroom and the Streets and the co-editor of What’s Race Got To Do With It? How current school reform maintains racial and economic inequality and Confronting Racism in Teacher Education: Counternarratives of Critical Practice. As a former elementary teacher, she currently examines the role of racism in education and prepares teachers to disrupt Whiteness in order to advance social and racial justice.
